There’s a lot to be said about the distances between the major Patagonia locations. Traveling to a Patagonia Location, depending on a multitude of factors, can be quite the challenge.

During these trying times of COVID restrictions, international travel to Patagonia has stopped to a crawl. And although vaccinations campaigns are slowly turning the tide, many questions still remain unanswered about the feasibility of free, unrestricted travel, throughout its territory.

Traveling in Patagonia

There are a few factors to have in mind while considering a visit to Patagonia. Its long distances and rapid changing weather need to be included as variables that can shift quickly at any giving moment.

First, make sure you research the condition of the road and the access options to a giving site. Many Patagonia national parks might have adjusted their visiting hours because of the pandemic. Plan what route it’s better to take. There are many provinces and territories with poor infrastructure, missing signage, and bad paved access (this is specially dangerous during the rainy season). Last thing you want to do is to get stuck in the middle of the Patagonia desert. If you are renting a car, make sure that the spare tire is present, and that you have tools to replace it in case of an emergency.

Second, local authorities should be able to inform you about the current situation of the Patagonia national parks and their activities. In Chile, the national parks are managed by CONAF authority and in Argentina by Parques Nacionales.
It’s also a good idea to contact the local tourist office to answer any specific question regarding access. Our experience has shown that they usually are better informed about local restrictions.

Having a defined itinerary might be a good idea, especially when many road authorities inquiry about your destination.

The Isla Magdalena is surrounded by the frigid waters of the Magellan straight. The island is home to a vast community of penguins and seagulls that use it as their summer breeding ground. Its lighthouse, designed and constructed by a Scottish engineer, aided the navigation of ships that circumvented the American continent during the early XX century.

The CONAF manages the island which has been declared a wildlife protected area.

Isla Magdalena, Magallanes Region

The Isla Magdalena is about 35 Km from the Chilean city of Punta Arenas in the Magallanes region. It takes about a forty-minute boat ride to reach its shores and, because of the straight’s strong winds, reaching the island can be a choppy experience. In our last photo tour, the winds were calm and our journey was very peaceful.

Back in 1837, the Chilean government enacted a decree for the construction and organization of a national network of lighthouses.
The Isla Magdalena lighthouse dates from a much later time. It was constructed by the Scottish engineer and architect George Slight in 1901 and became operational by the following year. Originally, the installation of the lighthouse consisted of a house with five bedrooms, an office, an oil tank and a store, plus kitchen.

In 1976, it was declared of historical importance due to its strategic location and function to the shipping trade lines.
This maritime route was the original navigable link between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans which precedes the Panama canal.

In 1981 the Chilean Navy delegated the maintenance of the site to CONAF, the Chilean park services, who has an active presence year round. There are two park rangers that take care of the lighthouse’s structure and protect the animal colonies.

During the summer, the Isla Magdalena becomes the breeding ground for its vast penguin population which hides its chicks underground to protect them from predators. The land is filled with holes which provide refuge to the colony during high winds. It also keeps the chicks safe and warm during the Patagonian night.
The waters of the Strait are abundant with mollusk and crustaceans which are the staple of the colony’s diet.

The Perito Moreno glacier is one of the great Patagonia sites we visit during Photo Tours South America Patagonia photo tour.

Millions of years ago, this rough and semi arid ecosystem witnessed a drastic change with the sudden extinction of the dinosaurs. Paleontological digs are very common in Patagonia. They tell the story of earth’s ancient inhabitants, where giant dinosaurs roamed the land of what we now call the American continent. A testament of this can be found at the museum of Carmen Funes, in the province of Neuquén where, the largest specimen of the dinosaur ever recorded (the Argentinosaurus), is on display.

People from all over the world travel to Patagonia due to its beauty and unique topography. This is in part due to its magnificent peaks which create the longest continental mountain range best known as the Andes. The mountains extend for over 4,300 miles and journey from the southern tip of Tierra del Fuego all the way into western Venezuela.

Patagonia’s weather is defined by the Andes elevation. It functions as a barrier to the wet Westerlies winds that blow relentlessly from the South Pacific ocean. Tales about the ferocity of the Patagonian winds abound and are not to be taken lightly. Its wind gusts has been known to bend car doors as well as light posts.
The Andes mountains also delimit the border between the countries of Argentina and Chile, which share the Patagonia region, as well as some of very photogenic and unique national parks.

Perito Moreno Glacier:

The Perito Moreno glacier is by far one of the most exciting destinations in Patagonia.

Loved by all Patagonia photography enthusiast, the glacier is located near El Calafate, in the Argentinean province of Santa Cruz.
Contrary to many glaciers around the world, the scientific community has recorded the expansion of the Perito Moreno glacier in recent decades, despite global warming.

Ice breakups are a spectacle not to be missed and they usually occur during the summer months.

Glacier’s observation deck is close to the waters of Lago Argentino. This scenic spot faces the lake and allows for a direct view of the ice giant just steps from land.
The glacier can also be accessed by foot and water.

Many reputable companies organize boat expeditions around Lago Argentino. This is a perfect way of exploring the area for photographers. The park has many precious spots that can only be reached by water.

Whilst both the deck and water excursions are well worth the journey to this location alone, the activity that in my opinion tops everything else, has to be the trek on top of the ice mass. It’s not everyday you have the chance to walk into a glacier!
The surface and some of its ice formation can be reached on ice walking treks which provide for fantastic photos. This is an absolute incredible adventure.

Tip: Leave the tripod at the hotel, It might be difficult to carry a lot of equipment on the icy adventure.

Patagonia Photography Tip:

Clothing is important! bring shoes and clothing appropriate for ice walking. During summer, the abundance of water due to the higher temperatures might create very slippery paths.

I hope you’re planning a trip to South America. We organize a Patagonia photo tour which not only visits the Perito Moreno glacier but the other Patagonia locations perfect for more Patagonia photography.

Please consider joining us in our upcoming photo tour. We are local to South American and to Patagonia. All our staff is bilingual and are very passionate about their own photography. If you are planning a photography trip to South America, contact us.

The glacier can also be accessed by foot and water. There are many reputable companies that organize boat expeditions around Lago Argentino. This is a perfect activity for a photography tour, since the park has many precious spots that can only be accessed by water.

Patagonia Photo Tour Tip:

Clothing is important! bring shoes and clothing appropriate for ice walking. During summer, the abundance of water due to the higher temperatures might create very slippery paths.

I hope you’re planning a trip to South America. We organize Photography tours Patagonia which not only visits the Perito Moreno glacier but the Torres del Paine and Monte Leon national Parks.

Please consider joining us in our upcoming photo tour. We are local to South American and to Patagonia. All our staff is bilingual and are very passionate about their own photography. If you are planning a photography trip to South America, contact us.

Like with traditional photography classes and instruction, a travel photography workshop aims to enhance your skills throughout a specific journey. Its striking contrast relies on the location and how the travel photography workshop gets presented to its participants.
Check out our upcoming Patagonia photography tour for 2018.

Photography Tour and Workshop – Intensive Learning In-situ

I for one like the idea of maximizing the instruction and teaching in just a few days. Research studies have shown that condensing material in a few short segments provides a better comprehension and absorption by the students.

A travel photography workshop works in a similar fashion:
A lot of information is condensed in just a few days, and its main advantage is experienced with the direct access to the instructors and the unique setting.
This is no small thing, since the possibility to incorporate new knowledge, and immediately utilize it on the field helps the learning process tremendously.

Observing Rather than Viewing in a Travel Photography Workshop

The French microbiologist and chemist Louis Pasteur, known for the invention of Pasteurization, had a very interesting quote:

Fortune Favors the Prepared Mind

While on location, and sometimes due to the cultural distance and ethnology variation of our own culture, our eye and mind can observe things in a different and alternative way. This is a great thing, but one that can only be advantageous to the “prepared mind” as Pasteur calls it. By developing your skills: understanding of light, composition, field of view, depth of field, perspective, color theory, etc. You can prepare your mind for anything you might encounter.

The theory is applied to the practice directly. Without delay, without hesitation. The canvas, the environment right before your eyes, can serve as the training ground to explore your photography without interruptions.

Traveling to a distant land can be a great opportunity to enhance these skills. The cultural distance and differences can trigger many ‘happy’ discoveries as a result of an alternative environment.

Excusado – Weston 1925

Take Edward Weston famous “Excusado” photograph from 1925. Weston took this picture in Mexico, and although the toilet is shown as a massive sculpture, Weston was truly fascinated with its design.
He himself had never lived in a house with internal plumbing while in the USA. This experience made him think about his surroundings. Pushed him to observe other objects that possessed an inherited beauty which can only be revealed to the ‘prepared mind’.

There are some photography locations that are truly special and photogenic like no other. Perhaps some of its advantages rely on their continuity and lack of change, such as their landscape and climate, which might not vary over many centuries thus preserving its charm and unique characteristics. The following is a photography location like no other.

Photography Location – Pucará de Tilcara

In our photo tour through the Northwestern region of Argentina – Magical Argentina – we’ll travel to this incredible photography location: El Pucará de Tilcara. An historical site with vast anthropological and archeological significance, which dates back before the Spanish colonization of America.

The Pucará is a city fortification with pre-Inca origins, strategically located on top of a hill, with rich, majestic views over the surrounding valley and La Quebrada de Humahuaca ( an access route that provided trade pathways to the Inca empire in the southern region. Currently a UNESCO protected site) This location was strategically chosen due to its access and its superior position against foreign invaders. Its history and constructions makes it a great photography location.

Traces of human habitation in the area date back more than 10,000 years. The Inca domination of the area only lasted for about half a century, and ended with the arrival of the Spanish in 1536, who founded the modern town of Tilcara in 1586.

Photography Location for Soda Estereo

During 1985, the Argentinian rock band “Soda Estereo” used this unique photography location as the backdrop for their emblematic single “Cuando Pase el Temblor” (When the tremor subsides).

The contrast of the ancient landscape against the group’s Goth/Dark looks, highlighted by singer’s Gustavo Cerati aesthetics, produced a truly striking contrast between the electro/reaggea groove with sound patches of northwestern Argentina pan-flute phrases.

The song and its music video not only became an instant hit throughout Latin America, but as a convergence of modern art and ancient history playing together, in search of a new cultural identity.

Join us next December when we visit El Pucará de Tilcara as part of our photography tour excursion through the Norther Region of Argentina. This is a great photography location along our itinerary.

Located in the South American Hemisphere, Argentina presents a very diverse and topography rich environment filled with incredible photography places for light seekers and nature excursionist.

With the extraordinaire Andes mountainous barrier at one side, delimiting its international western boundary with Chile, and the Rio de la Plata and the South Atlantic ocean as its Eastern seaborne, many Argentina photography places present some diverse and unique characteristics unrivaled by other destinations in the world.

Here is a list of some highlights from its amazing photography places:

Glaciar Perito Moreno, Santa Cruz

The massive view is spectacular. Some might catalog the immense mass of ice as a highlight for Argentina photography places in the Patagonia.
El Glaciar Perito Moreno is part of the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares which is also part of the Hielo Continental Patagónico (about 10563.31 miles) which is considered one of the most important sources of drinkable water in the world. Some 90% percent of this resource is located at glaciers, rivers, the Antarctic continent and Greenland.

The glacier is by far one of the most visited sites in Argentina, specially photographers, and particularly in the Patagonia region. It’s possible to gain access to the glacier by either land or by water routes. So If you arrive with your own vehicle, you can follow Santa Cruz’s province route #15 from Calafate city for around 80 km, approximately one hour and 30 minutes.

Catarátas del Iguazú, Misiones

The Iguazú falls, without a doubt, is a unique natural spectacle that can’t be observed, quite like this, anywhere else in the world. This is by far, one of the best Argentina photography places you would find in the country and, according to many, in all South America.

If you’re looking for the top Argentina photography places for nature and landscape photography, this can most definitely be one of the highlight of your photography journey.

Following the course of the Iguazu river, the devil’s throat is perhaps the most spectacular view at the falls. The province of Misiones, on the northern east boundary of Argentina, shares its national limit with the countries of Brazil and Paraguay. Part of the falls can be accessed from the Brazilian side, but the most spectacular views can be observed from the Argentina’s side.

Quebrada de las Conchas, Salta

The Shell’s Ravine at the province of Salta, close to the city of Cafayate, is of amazing beauty due to its panoramas and red rock formations. Some of the most celebrated sites around the ravine are the Amphitheater, the Devil’s throat and the Castles (Los Castillos) were millions of years of constant water and ice erosion gave way to some amazing shape and form to the rock formations in the ravine.
This is a must destination for photographers, a worthy entry for our list of Argentina photography places, and part of our Photo Tours South America’s Argentina photography tour.

Quebrada de las Flechas, Salta

The Arrows Ravine can be visited while traveling at Route #40 on the Province of Salta. It connects the city of Cafayate and Cachi and its most characteristic feature is an extraordinary topology. Its particular shape and design dates to its origin about 15 to 20 millions of years ago, where massive blocks of stone started to raise due to the elevation of the Puna during the Precambrian era. Deep faults at the surface raised the rocks defining ridges resembling the arrows.

Buenos Aires, CABA

Sometimes referred as the Paris of South America, the city of Buenos Aires has a long and rich cultural history. The vast immigration from Europe and Asia have created a cosmopolitan metropolis that prides itself as the cradle of Tango. Its cultural offerings are diverse and rich as well as its constant and ever evolving art scene.
As with any mega metropolis, Buenos Aires is a perfect place for photography due to its rich architecture, cuisine and picturesque neighborhoods. It’s definitely a must destination thus, one of the most important Argentina photography places.

Cerro Fitz Roy, Santa Cruz

The Cerro Fitz Roy is a very famous mountain in the Patagonia region, at the border line between Argentina and Chile. It is located at the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, near El Chaltén village. It was first climbed in 1952 by French alpinists Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone, it remains among the most technically challenging mountains for mountaineers on Earth. Its spectacular vistas makes it a breathtaking sight and one of the many beautiful places in Argentina’s Patagonia region. This is one of the highlights of Argentina photography places to visit since every year thousands of climbers and photographers from all over the world do the pilgrimage during the summer, spring and fall southern months, to experience its unparalleled beauty. Little known fact: Patagonia clothing founder Yvon Chouinard used Cerro Fitz Roy as the basis for the company’s logo.

Traslasierra, Córdoba

The valley of Traslasierra in the province of Córdoba is about 2 hours west from the city of Córdoba through the high peak road (Camino de las Altas Cumbres) and it provides its visitors with exquisite beauty and unparalel calm. Known around the country for its exceptional weather and micro-climate, the Champaqui hill and valleys provide a unique moderated atmospheric characteristics for its population and as a tourist destination. Traslasierra is very fortunate due to its majestic views and panoramas and it’s a must for a stop as a relaxed spot on Argentina photography places.

Sierra de la Ventana, Buenos Aires

About 373 miles from the city of Buenos Aires, and well inside the country side, La Sierra de la Ventana is bounded by the Laguna del Monte, Guaminí at its northwestern end and the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest. La Sierra de la Ventana lies on a precambrian base formed around 2.2 billion years ago. Its famous and incredible panoramas make it a worth stop for Argentina photography places we recommend. The ever green landscape and its rock formations make it an enjoyable journey for any traveling photographer.

Quebrada de Humahuaca, Jujuy

La Quebrada de Humahuaca is a highly representative example of the Andean valleys, due to its exceptional system of communication routes and economic, social and cultural exchanges.
This is the most important physical linkage between the high Andean lands and the extensive temperate plains in south-eastern South America. The ravine is defined by an extensive mountainous valley with an asymmetric profile that extends from North to South for over 34 miles. It can be found at the northwest of Argentina at the province of Jujuy.
Its cultural heritage dates back 10,000 years and it’s very significant. It follows the major cultural route, the Camino del Inca, for the movement and transaction of goods for all the Andean region. Next December we are traveling to Jujuy on our first Argentina photo tour.

Tilcara, Jujuy

In the heart of the Jujuy there’s a spot with magnificent vistas and vast cultural heritage close to La Quebrada de Humahuaca. El Pucará de Tilcara is an archaeological site from the indigenous tribes that inhabited the region. Its strategic orientation and vistas, from this ancient enclave, provided uninterrupted line on sight to all the access routes and transit areas surrounding the city. The archaeological value of this emplacement is tremendous. Thankfully it’s well preserved and a good excuse to be included on our list of Argentina photography places.

Purmamarca, Jujuy

Home of the hill with seven colors (La colina de siete colores) Purmamarca is definitely one of Argentina photography places to visit. Its cobbled streets are usually filled with local artisans, surrounding the main church, selling scarfs, ponchos and porcelain. It’s dry and sunny days are enjoyable for sight-seen, a perfect excuse to discover its colonial past.

Travel photography portraits are a great way to tell the story of any given culture. We’re re-posting an article that was not available online by photographer Jim Zuckerman that was first published at Pixiq website. Needless to say that we found it very interesting because it throws away the misconception of magical photo serendipity.
I have seen and heard many great travel photographers illustrate the same concept: You need to plan accordingly, and be ready in order to take a great photo.

It’s no secret that models and light need direction and sculpting. Both require knowledge thus is important you assume the director role while on location. A great travel photography portraits can sometimes be a more effective connection with the audience, than a landscape or candid photo.

Here’s the original post reproduced here:

Guaranteed results with careful planning

Travel photography is often frustrating because you can’t always be in the right place at the right time with the right lighting. What usually happens, though, is you breeze in and out of a village or town relying on serendipity to get good shots. This is not the way to do it.

I learned a long time ago that it takes forethought and planning to guarantee great pictures of people in other cultures. Sure, serendipity does happen sometimes where everything comes together as a pleasant surprise. We all know, however, that this doesn’t happen often.

Therefore, when I travel to a place like Africa, I make a list of the types of images I want to take in tribal environments. For example, my preconceived idea list when I took a photo tour group to Namibia looked like this:

Silhouette of Bushman archer in tall grass

Bushmen hunting party

Silhouette of Bushmen against large sun

Himba family in sunset lighting walking toward the camera

Himba girls dancing

To get these kinds of shots, I have to wear a director’s hat and set these images up. I use my local guide to arrange the time of day (usually sunrise or sunset), the location (which I have scouted), and I always select the models to make sure they are the kind of people I want to photograph. The fee is negotiated before the actual shoot, of course.

At the appointed time, through a tribal interpreter, I direct the action. For example, I’ll tell a mother with children to walk to the camera from a particular place. I instruct them to forget about the cameras and to pretend we are not there. Or I will tell a group of Bushmen exactly how to stand, look, crouch, or aim a bow. In this way, I get perfect pictures for my photo tour group and me.

Travel photography is an exciting thing. As a photographer, I always look forward to my next travel adventure as soon as I get back home from a recent trip.

Here are some 5 ideas to have in mind while you prepare for any travel photography:

Travel Photography Smart Gear Checklist:

When on the go, it’s very important to have comfortable access to your equipment. That can be anything from camera bodies, lenses, filters, batteries, etc. Long are gone the days of the classic photographer camera bags!
There are many new alternatives such as the photography back-packs, messenger bags – and my all time favorite – sling photo bags. I like them best since they force me to pack light. The added advantage is the extra support for changing lenses and filters. Beware, always make absolutely sure you close those zippers tightly. I had lenses drop and damaged because of unzipped pockets.

Camera holsters are amazing helpers for traveling photography excursions. I only recent came accustomed to use them and they have made my traveling photography much more enjoyable. I use the black window camera holster. It allows me to ‘snap’ my camera to the holster, which is attached to my belt. This provides an extra level of independence, without putting pressure on your neck, releasing your neck and extremities from the extra weight. Say goodbye to the regular camera straps !

Memory readers and an extra sets of cables are a must for traveling photography. No matter if you’re in a remote location or in the middle of a urban area, proper back-up of your content should be a serious endeavor you devote yourself once you finish with your photography traveling. I pack an extra set of cables and camera readers just in case of failure. A precious moment perhaps cannot be reproduced on a later date (weather, people, conditions, etc) it’s important to always be prepared for safeguarding your photography

Are you planning to take your equipment in extreme weather ? Plan to protect it with a rain or dust coat. Sometimes the inclement of the weather can play adversely to your plans. It’s smart to have options and protect your gear investment

Batteries and memory cards. I cannot stress this enough. Redundancy is everything. Pack enough batteries and memory to last you for the entire day. Nowadays, both memory and batteries are affordable enough. Make sure you pack enough juice and room to last you for your planned photography traveling and also consider how accessible these are while on location. You don’t want to miss a shot due to a dead battery!

The ravine is defined by an extensive mountainous valley with an asymmetric profile that extends from North to South for over 34 miles. It can be found at the northwest of Argentina at the province of Jujuy.
Its cultural heritage dates back 10,000 years and it’s very significant. It follows the major cultural route, the Camino Inca, for the movement and transaction of goods for all the Andean region.

The valley shows abundant and confirmed evidence of its use as a major trade route over the past 10,000 years.
It features visible traces of prehistoric hunter-gatherer communities, of the Inca Empire (15th to 16th centuries) and of the fight for independence in the 19th and 20th centuries.

La Quebrada de Humahuaca is a highly representative example of the south Andean valleys, due to its exceptional system of communication routes and economic, social and cultural exchanges.
This is the most important physical linkage between the high Andean lands and the extensive temperate plains in south-eastern South America.
